Hushpuppi sentenced to 11years imprisonment for fraud

Notorious Nigerian Instagram influencer Ramon Abbas widely known as Hushpuppi has been jailed for more than 11 years in the US for money laundering.

According to a statement from the United States Department of Justice Hushpuppi was also ordered to pay $1,732,841 in restitution to two fraud victims.

The 40 year old rose to fame on social media where he flaunted he flaunted his wealth and had more than two million followers on Instagram before he was arrested in 2020 in Dubai.

In 2021, Hushpuppi pleaded guilty to money laundering, admitting attempting to steal more than $1.1m from someone who wanted to fund a new children’s school in Qatar.

He also admitted to “several other cyber and business email compromise schemes that cumulatively caused more than $24 million in losses”, the US justice department said.

Hushpuppi however apologised for his crimes to Judge Otis D Wright in a handwritten note, saying he would use his personal funds to pay back his victims.

Ramon Abbas has sentenced to 135 months in federal prison.
