Debate: Who Is VGMA Artiste of the Decade?

The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards will enter its 20th season this year which is definitely a great achievement for Ghana’s biggest music festival.

Since its inception in 1999, Charter House, the organizers of the event have awarded hardworking artistes in the country and its credibility may sometimes have some doubts, it is virtually accepted and acknowledged by wide range of people both in and outside Ghana. However, the main debate here is who would be crowned the Artiste of the Decade since 2009 to 2019?

This period has been one of the major turnarounds in the history of Ghana music. Instead of the previous years where it was mostly dominated by Highlife and Hip Life music, other genres have also pulled their weight to also make a mark in previous. Notable of them was 2017 when we first had a Gospel Act winning the Overall Artiste of the Year (Joe Mettle). Dancehall music has also stepped up with Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy and Ebony Reigns (RIP) also coming coming in to win the coveted crown. Rappers have also not been left out Sarkodie and EL coming in to a mark. Sarkodie in particular winning it twice, not forgetting Okyeame Kwame who won it in 2009 after a massive year.

Since 2009, here are all the winners we’ve had for Artiste of the Year so far.

2009 – Okyeame Kwame

2010 – Sarkodie

2011 – VIP

2012 – Sarkodie

2013 – R2Bees

2014 – Shatta Wale

2015 – Stonebwoy

2016 – EL

2017 – Joe Mettle

2018 – Ebony

The last time the Artiste of the Decade was awarded, it was the Music Man Kojo Antwi who carried it away. Sarkodie is the only artiste in the decade to win it twice with over 50 nominations and 21 awards. Not forgetting that artistes like Stonebwoy, Kwabena Kwabena, Efya and many more have also won a number of awards.

So who should be crowned the Artiste of the Decade this year? Leave your thoughts in the comment box or on Social Media:
